How to Make The Perfect Breakfast Smoothie


HOW TO MAKE THE PERFECTS MOOTHIE

Okay, so I’m sure this has been done a million different ways.  So maybe I should’ve said “How to Make My Favorite Breakfast Smoothie”.  This is my favorite because this is the one that has proven to keep me feeling satisfied for hours throughout the morning.  In fact when it is time for lunch I am still………okay.  I could eat.  But I’m not starving.  I’m even tempered and calm.  That is a huge difference from as little as 3 months ago. So what smoothie is this.  You probably guessed it.  It’s the Virgin Diet Shake.  The recipe can be found in the book, The Virgin Diet, by J.J. Virgin. But wait!  I am adding to this recipe with instructions on how to make it so that you don’t make a mess of your kitchen and your blender and you can make it  super fast.

So my ingredients:

1 cup of blueberries (if it goes a little bit more than that like, 1 1/4 cup, that’s okay) I use the Trader Joe’s organic wild blueberries.  (and sometimes the regular if I’m being cheap)

2 scoops of Pea Protein Powder.  I love it because it only has one ingredient – peas.  Isn’t that awesome.  In a world of unknown chemicals popping up by the dozen in every packaged food we consume, how great it is to see something in a package with one ingredient – peas.  I use the brand Now Foods Pea Proteinand I buy it on Amazon in bulk.  I used to buy it at Whole Foods but it’s much cheaper if you buy the 50 oz. on Amazon. Remember buy it unflavored!

12 oz. of unsweetened vanilla almond milk OR  coconut milk  (JJ Virgin recommends coconut but I like almond too).  I buy mine at Trader Joe’s usually but sometimes I’ll get the Silk brand.  I always get the Silk brand if I’m doing coconut milk.  I like that one better and I can’t seem to find unsweetened vanilla flavored coconut milk at Trader Joes.

1 cup of spinach.  Now don’t get scared.  It won’t hurt, I promise.  You won’t even notice it.  I double pinky swear!

And 2  squeezes of Stevia.  stevia2

 

 

So first I recommend you buy a Magic Bullet NutriBullet 12-Piece High-Speed Blender/Mixer System.  The NutriBullet allows you to make the smoothie right there in the cup you will drink it out of.  The Magic Bullet NutriBullet 12-Piece High-Speed Blender/Mixer System comes with cups in different sizes and lids with handles so you can take your smoothie on the go.  And the best part is that there is no kitchen cleanup since you’re making the smoothie right in the cup you’re going to drink from. It’s super affordable and very convenient and it doesn’t take up a lot of room on your kitchen counter.

But buyer beware – if you don’t make this smoothie in the order I’m telling you:

It won’t mix well; it will ooze out the sides and cause a mess; and then you’ll have all this cleanup and extra stirring that will seriously irritate you.

So, in this order please:

Pour about 4 oz. of the milk into the cup (eyeball a fourth of the blender cup). Put in one scoop of protein powder and tap the scoop on top so that it breaks up. Next Put in the berries. Then stuff a cup of fresh spinach on top.  It will be tight!

Then pour the milk around the sides until you fill to the top just shy of the ridged rim. Then squeeze the little dropper of stevia into the top – 2 long squeezes.

Then put the blender top on it, turn it to lock and place it on top of the blender.  When you lock it in it will start blending immediately and then you don’t need to hold it.  It should take less t a minute to blend.  If you use almond milk it will look dark purple, muddy.

If you use coconut milk it will look lighter purple, like a dark lavender, soft. And that’s it.  Your will have a protein-rich smoothie with veggies guaranteed to keep you satisfied all morning long.  Before drinking these smoothies, I would always need a banana around 10:00 am to help me make it to lunch. And I mean, like I had to have it.   But now, I can go 4-5 hours strong on just the smoothie.  And I don’t feel tired at all.  It’s awesome.

In her book,  The Virgin Diet, J.J. Virgin recommends putting in chia seeds for extra fiber but I haven’t found a need for that because of all the vegetables I eat throughout the day.  Maybe I’ll try it one day but for now, this is my favorite smoothie.  I hope you’ll try it and like it.  I know you’ll love how it makes you feel.  Bon appetit!
